The students really engaged with the practical workshop in order to develop their concentration, focus, energy and imagination. There was a variety of exercises which enabled the students to think carefully about how they interpret dialogue vocally and physically. The use of humour was also used to great effect in order to engage the students and provoke creative responses to the tasks given. The was a wealth of knowledge which was imparted to the students about how to embody the role and 'feel' the emotions rather than simply 'acting' the emotion. There was also valuable opportunities for the students to share work in order to analyse how effective choices had been made in performance. One students noted: 'I enjoyed developing my skills of imagination in order to heighten my performance response of the use of vocal and physical skills in order to create a successful interpretation. The workshop also enhanced my focus and energy ready for the performance in order that I could bring out the truthfulness of my role'.
Daniel Sellers, Head of Performing Arts at Hornsea School & Language College (2017)
‘There is a strong core belief in Darren’s style of teaching that a stage need not be covered with set and through his passion for the works of Peter Brook he focuses on this and in turn gives a complete power to the performer to create and inspire. Darren does this with his actors by making them feel comfortable with him, their fellow performers, the audience and most of all the space itself.’ Michael Day, Actor, Owner Posh Dinosaur Productions.
'Darren is a committed, hard-working, talented director and writer whose work I am happy to recommend.' Andy Jordan, Founder; Producer/Director at ANDY JORDAN PRODUCTIONS Ltd
'It's rare to find someone as passionate - and knowledgeable - about the theatre and film, as Darren. Darren's work is both thought-provoking and challenging. Darren's views are that theatre should be a life-changing experience and what you see on stage stays with the audience long after the performance ends.' Kevan Jackson, General Manager at Retina Dance
‘One of Darren’s biggest attributes is his honesty, which enables all who work with him the ability to take risks knowing that he will help guide them in the right direction. As a workshop leader he delivers innovative, exciting and thought provoking exercises that I have learnt a great deal from. His workshops are highly creative and he does not limit his exercises with preconceived outcomes, but instead allows all those involved to go on a process of discovery.’ Simon Bellars, Actor/Teacher
‘Working with Darren A. Furniss has been thought-provoking, challenging and fun. He has such an enthusiasm and an incredible attention to detail, which is captivated into the workshops or rehearsals which I have been a part of. Using explorative exercises, he has provided me with techniques and insights into how an actor should and can perform on a more visceral level.’ Natalie Reed, Actor/Dancer
‘For me personally, working with Darren has taught me a great deal about myself as a performer. There are no illusions to this kind of work, there are no egos to this type of work, there is no room for anything less than the best possible standards.’ Liam Gregory, Actor
‘I have worked with Darren in both workshops and rehearsals and it has always been a pleasure. His energy, depth of research, passion and awareness are very encouraging to any performer and are a great help when developing and understanding a character or text. As well as teaching skills, he encourages courageousness in his teaching and, each time, I have found myself to be more confident and better motivated as a result.’ Dean Fisher, Actor
